Case study · Construction

Site photos lost across too many apps. Now they land in one place.

SitePulse is a phone app built for a Queensland construction business. It gives field crews one place to send photos, video and voice notes, and gives head office one place to reach them. Built for marketing, useful wherever the work needs a photo record.

The problem

The best moments on site never reached marketing

I have seen this problem first-hand. A crew finishes a milestone and someone takes a great photo. Then it goes into a text, a WhatsApp group or a message to a mate, and that is where it stays.

Scattered across messages

Photos arrived through random texts and WhatsApp channels. Marketing could not tell a marketing image from a photo of a delivery docket, and most good moments never arrived at all.

Squashed on the way

Messaging apps and workplace platforms like Teams and Google's tools cap file sizes and shrink photos. By the time an image reached marketing the quality was too low for a website, a tender or a social post.

No easy way back to the field

News from head office went out by email and sat unread. There was no simple way to put a message in front of a crew working out on site.

The solution

One app for the whole team

SitePulse is a simple app on every worker's phone. It works on iPhone and Android and is designed for one-handed use, outdoors, on site. It runs independently of the platforms the business already uses, so it isn't held back by the size limits that Microsoft and Google tools put on photos and video.

How it works

From a phone on site to a library marketing can use

1Capture

The worker opens the app and chooses Site Moment, Photo of the Month or Photo of the Year, then adds a photo, video or voice note.

2Send

They pick their site, add an optional caption and send. The file arrives at full quality, exactly as the camera took it.

3Notify

Marketing gets an email for every submission, so nothing waits in someone's camera roll.

4Use

Marketing browses by site and type, downloads the original files and exports the log whenever it needs to.

Both directions

Reaching the crew, not just hearing from them

The feed also works the other way. Head office posts text and images that the whole team sees in one place. Anything urgent comes up as a notification on the worker's lock screen, so news from the office no longer depends on someone finding the right email.

Engagement

Photo of the Month

To get people sending, I added a competition. Crews vote on each other's photos, and a site photo becomes something to be proud of. Marketing ends up with a steady stream of the best images the business has.

One vote each

Every worker gets one vote per month.

No self-votes

Nobody can vote for their own entry.

A fresh start monthly

The Contests tab only shows the current month's photos.

Month to year

Each month's winner goes through to Photo of the Year.

The outcome

What it is built to achieve

1Everything in one place

Photos, video and voice notes from every site land in one library, organised by site, instead of sitting in personal phones and chats. It doubles as a dated photo record of the work, with no manual filing.

2Images marketing can use

Original-quality files, ready for a website, a tender or a social post. Because it runs independently of Microsoft and Google tools, nothing is capped or shrunk.

3A direct line to the crew

Head office updates reach everyone in one feed, with urgent news on the lock screen.

4Crews who want to take part

The monthly competition makes sending a great photo something people are proud to do.

5Less chasing

Marketing is notified as content arrives and no longer has to ask around for photos.

6Ready for the next business

Built once, it can be set up for another team in a few hours.

Built for a Queensland construction client and tested by their team. Client details are withheld.

What's next

Every image, sorted on arrival

The next step goes beyond competition entries. It captures every image taken on site and categorises each one automatically as it arrives. Each image is then filed in the right library or folder, by project, site or type of work. Nobody has to rename, sort or chase anything. That makes it a photo record of the work as well as a marketing library.

Planned. This extension is the next stage of the build and is not part of the delivered app.
